Hi everyone,

My American fiancee is trying to apply to extend her stay in Canada. We are getting married on December 13th, and she would have to leave on December 18th. Unfortunately, we can't figure out how to apply online for an extension of her visit. We've tried to use the CIC website, and it isn't giving us any kind of online application code.

Does anyone know how to get a code to do this application online, or if I've just missed something silly? We'd like to just get it done tonight and send it off. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you!

Go here and follow the steps.

Once you have answered the questions, should your partner be eligible you will get a checklist code which will be for a visitor application. Log in to MyCIC (or register if first time) and then follow the steps to complete the application.

I've been using that site, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to cover our situation at all.

We're not married yet, but will be before her six months expires. She didn't have a visa coming here because she's from the US, so there's no visa to extend. I've tried a few ways to explain it to the site, but I can't seem to get to anything that'll let her extend her stay. It's getting frustrating. Thanks for your help though.

The code is specific to your situation (your partners country of residence, status, if you are common law etc) so without knowing all that we cannot help you with the code.

However if you have tried determining your eligibility and it generates no code then it seems your circumstances are not covered.

Extension of visitor visa is applicable to visitors with visa exempt country passports. Married or not is irrelevant. To my understanding, people with US passports need to extend the visitor visa if they want to stay longer.

Did you answer the questionnaire correctly? What does it tell you when you finish all the questions?

OK, I figured it out. I had been filling in that she wants to stay in Canada, as opposed to visit (forgetting that a PR application will come later).

We've got everything we need now except one thing. The first thing it asks for on the application is a Unique Client Identifier (UCI). The guide says it can be found on her study or work permit...but she doesn't have either of those. She came to Canada as a visitor. So do we just ignore that question, or should we be looking for a UCI somewhere else?

She doesn't have a UCI yet, so just leave it blank.

OK, perfect! Thanks so much!

Also, one last question (sorry)...The website asked us to provide documentation for how she will be financially supported while she's here. I've printed off one of my pay stubs, and included a signed letter stating my intent to financially support her. Should we include anything else, or would that probably be enough? I do make enough to support us.

That's all I attached when I applied for my husband's extension earlier this year. I think I also had received a raise and a letter stating that so I might have added that, I can't quite remember.

OK, HOPEFULLY the last question here. We're filling out the form now. The one issue is, some of the fields don't leave enough space for what we want to say. For example, the purpose of our extension is because we're getting married Dec. 13th, and applying for PR right afterwards. But there's not enough room on the online form to write this. What should we do? Would it be OK to print the form and fill it out by hand, and then scan and submit it electronically? Any other ideas?

be very careful how you attach all your documents because if you simply submit then resubmit one after the other you will just replace the previous document , we did this once and it got rejected . you need to combine all the documents for each submission sub section into one file then submit the merged file .....................so basicly create pdf for each provided document ie pay stub ,letter of financial support etc then use a pdf merge program and merge all the separate pdf files into one pdf file , it lists the size you can have of the final submitted pdf , it takes a while and is the tricky part . your passport photo needs to be a certain size , and pay attention to the pages requested such as the passport stamped page and the passport bio page make seperate pdf files for each page then merge them all for each section ..................hope this helps keep the file size small you can do it
