Applying for TRV extension

I have applied to sponsor my wife, I have been approved as a sponsor and she has entered Canada on a TRV. She was given 6 months, but I see application processing times for Permanent Residence at the applicable visa office can be from 7-15 months. How difficult is it to apply for an extension at the end of the 6 months? We have a 10 month old son, who is now in Canada and we can't bare the thought of having to be apart again for 6+ months.

That link should give you information on extending a visitor stay. I believe you need to apply at least a month before the original visa runs out.

They recommend applying for an extension one month before it expires but they will accept applications received (or probably even mailed) up to the day before expiry. The will usually grant an extension while a PR application is in progress, so long as there are no problems with support while in Canada and returning once if the PR is ultimately denied.
