Hello everyone,

Has anyone been successful in renewing their OHIP coverage using the WP-EXT letter from IRCC? What steps did you take?

For context, I have a spousal open work permit that expired last July 22nd. As a consequence, my OHIP coverage expired on the same day too. I was the primary applicant for OHIP and my husband, being a student here, is also covered by OHIP as my dependent. He recently completed his program in April and applied for a PGWP in May. Along with his application was my renewal application for OWP too. We were issued letters from IRCC that we are currently on maintained/implied status until a decision is made on our applications.

  • Mine - WP-EXT only except PGWP
  • Husband - WP-EXT for PGWP

If you were not successful in renewing your OHIP coverage, can you please recommend what private insurance coverage you got in the interim while you are waiting for the approval of your PGWP/OWP extension? If you have a group extended health insurance from your company as a benefit, in general, are we still able to use this kind of insurance without a valid OHIP coverage.

Thank you!!

Were you able to extend your OHIP using the WP-EXT?

You can't renew your OHIP on maintained status, which is the same as having the WP-EXT letter. You need to have a work permit.

You can try. I did and was successful. There was a temporary internal policy. My status was still valid but he gave me an additional year and my status was expiring in 4 months.
Hi
May I ask which Service Ontario location did you visit? Would you please share about the temporary internal policy? When did you renew?

Nope. You can renew health card with wp-ext and your original WP. Just did it today. No question asked. Felt like they knew the drill.

As processing times increased and also due to Covid OHIP made some changes including coverage during implied status.
