Hi all!
I’m hoping someone will be able to help me with my question as I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere!

My partner is a Canadian Citizen and I am a UK national currently in Canada on an ETA 6 month visitor visa. Last July we applied for PR under common-law partner family sponsorship from OUTSIDE of Canada.

So my question is, can I apply for an open work permit from within Canada, on this visitor visa, despite applying for PR from outside of Canada?

If not, can I go to the US for a short trip and apply from there?

Thank you in advance for any help, I really appreciate it!

You don't qualify for an open work permit associated with spousal sponsorship since you applied outland.

Going to the US for a short trip won't change anything.

I see, thanks for the info. Do you know if there is any kind of semi-permanent work permit I can apply for given my situation?

Work permits are all temporary visas.

To qualify for a work permit, you would need to secure a job offer from an employer in Canada and that employer would need to obtain an approved LMIA. You could then apply for a closed work permit linked to that specific employer.
