My husband is on the last stage and they said they don' require anymore documents from us and they are currently processing his background check which we don't know how long it will take. But, my question is his open work permit is about to expire on January 19, 2017. But I am pretty sure they will make a decisin between 3 or 4 months from now but my question is can it become a problem if his open work permit expires and he decides not to renew it and to just wait for his permanent residence. ???????

He is not a permanent resident - he is a temporary resident. He needs to be truthful in his university application (lying in any official application is always a bad idea). He can include a letter stating he has applied for PR and expects to receive it before starting school.

He should not let himself go out of status in Canada. He should either apply for a new OWP before the old one expires or apply to change his status to visitor before his OWP expires.
