Hi guys,

I applied for a renewal of my study visa while I was still in Canada but planned to go back to Germany to visit my family. I applied for a new passport here and thought I could just use it at the border along with my old passport and that the visa would have the expiration date of the new one.

My visa got accepted and it just arrived in the mail in Canada–already finished and everything, the problem is that the expiration date is August 4, 2016. So, pretty soon. I wasn't planning on going back to Canada before July, 28. Can I transfer the new visa to my new passport and get it extended or do I have to apply for a new visa and hope that it arrives in time?

Any help would be appreciated, I am panicking about my future.

Did you receive your new SP after you applied for extension or you received a TRV Visa ?

If it's a SP, then I think you will need to extend your Study Permit using your new passport number or apply for a new one since yours expire on August, which is before the beginning of the session ( September ).

You may also face problems on border ( Airport ) because they will notice that your Study Permit expires soon and you will be asked to apply for a new one.

Your case is similar to mine, I have applied for a Study Permit extension a month ago and waiting the approval using my current passport which expires on November,2017. I have 2 sessions left and my new CAQ expires on August,2017 which is pretty enough for my left studies and right now I am in my home country and willing to renew my passport and I don't know if it will affect the study permit I am about to get..

Better solution for this is to call CIC on phone and ask them directly, they are much helpful in these situations and will guide you to the best road.

Goodluck

I received my SP visa (extended). I am going to apply for a new one right now and I think everything should work out then because I'm allowed to stay in Canada until a decision about my new application is made. I also made an appointment with an immigration lawyer to be safe.

Thanks for your answer and good luck. As far as I know, you should be able to transfer your current visa to a new passport.
