when you say in Canada did you apply inland or outland?

if you applied INLAND, did you include an Open Work Permit with your application? If so, then you would enjoy the benefit of IMPLIED status until the OWP is approved after stage 1 (currently taking 16 months). During this time, you can not leave Canada, or your implied status would expire.

If you did NOT include an open work permit with your inland application, or your applied Outland, then what you will want to do is apply to change your status to visitor on the CIC website. the cost is $100, and PR applicants are rarely denied. I would recommend requesting a 16-24 months extension to ensure you have proper status until inland approval. if you applied outland, then 12 months is probably enough time to request. It is very common for pr applicants to get approved for this much of an extension.

no, unfortunately, implied status only works if you sent the OWP WITH your inland application. it does not work otherwise. So, your only choice right now to maintain legal status is to apply to change your status to visitor on the CIC website (or by mail). it's recommended to do this at least 30 days prior to your visa expiring.

I can't help you with that. to be clear, you are not filling out a new application for a visitor visa, you are applying to "Change your status" or "extend your status". these are 2 very different applications, and it seems to be quite simple to apply to change your status.

i'm sure someone will be around soon to post a link to the correct location on the cic website and help you with the invalid question. I am sure there are recent threads that discuss this matter, so it may be best to do some searching on threads from yesterday and Monday to see if you can find the link.
