I am currently applying for PR in Canada. My Canadian husband and I plan on staying for at least 10 years, but then are hoping to both move to the US. Where he is a Canadian, what is the process for him to immigrate? What are the options? Will I have to have permanent residence status in the US before I can sponsor him?

Yes the only way to immigrate to the U.S. is to be sponsored by a family member or get sponsorship through a Job. The simplist route is thru family. So if you have any family in the u.s. like a parent that could possibly sponsor you that would be easiest. Normally to sponsor a spouse or family to move to the U.S. you need to have a U.S. green card (PR) or citizenship. The process can be complicated and lengthy depending on th situation. So make sure to check on the current laws when you are actually looking at moving to the U.S. It can be done but is complciated.

You could also apply to the visa lottery system for U.S. green cards where the U.S. government randomly selects people to recieve PR, but they only accept so many from each country so the odds are not great, but it is another possible option. This is the offical U.S. government website for immigration http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis make sure to use this site since there are many other sites that have information, but are not offical and may want to charge you money or take your information.

If I then have dual citizenship can I sponsor my husband? Or do I need to be a permanent resident of the US?

In case you're interested, here's a good US immigration forum:

...and here's the specific section of the forum that deals with Green Cards through marriage:

There's also another US immigration website at visajourney.com. My understanding is that, if you were a US citizen or greencard holder, you could apply to sponsor your spouse to the States - but you have to be able to demonstrate that you meet certain income/asset requirements and there's also a piece about being "domiciled" in the States. For example, I'm a US citizen living in Canada with my Canadian husband. It's my understanding that I would have to go back to the States and get a job there, making a certain income, before I'd be eligible to sponsor my husband. That's pretty simplistic, and I don't know the details because I got stopped at that point, but the links to the other forum and VisaJourney should help with specifics.
