Hello everyone, would my fiancé and I be able to marry in Michigan so that his children are able to be present? Would an American marriage license suffice for our CIC package? Or would we have to have a canadian one?
Thanks in advance!

You can get married Michigan .An American marriage certificate will be enough . A marriage licence in Canada is different to a marriage certificate .Not sure if they are the same thing in the US.

as taffy mentioned, a marriage license is different than the required marriage certificate. generally, the marriage license is what is needed before the ceremony to record your plans of marriage, the marriage CERTIFICATE is what is actually recorded by the city/town after the ceremony, which is taken and signed off by the officiant at the ceremony. it can takes days to weeks after the ceremony for it to be recorded and for the certificate to be ready.

the application requires the CERTIFICATE, not the license, and, yes, canada recognizes marriages from the US.

me and my Canadian wife got married in the USA. We provided a copy of the certificate. Note that the USA uses a certificate of marriage record(a number of pages which includes license, divorces if any, and other marriage documents) as official proof of marriage, whereas Canada uses the a single parchment style certificate. We were issued a parchment certificate by the Judge that married us which we used in our application. Just make sure you send the certificate, and not the marriage record or marriage licence. CIC will only accept the parchment style certificate[/img][/img]
for US citizens, all that's needed is a COPY of a marriage certificate. I don't know what you mean by "parchment style" certificate. where i'm from in the states, the certificate is printed out on plain white printer paper and notarized by the town it was issued. it is not "parchment" style. also, the US marriage certificate (at least in the state i'm from) is a 1 page document. there are no other "marriage documents" and divorce documents would be completely separate.

for us citizens, all that is needed in the application is a COPY of the marriage certificate that is recorded by the town/city the marriage took place in. there is no specific type of paper it needs to be printed on, and it does NOT need to be the original copy. the US instructions are clear about this.

what you posted as a link certainly is not what a marriage certificate from the US looks like, at least the one that is commonly issued by the town/city the marriage takes place in. it usually looks like a legal document, and has a lot more information on it. kindly refrain from posting confusing and misleading information.

to the original poster, all you have to do is go down to the town hall where you got married and apply for a copy of your marriage certificate. it is really easy to do, and doesn't cost very much. make a copy for the application, and keep the original for your own purposes. it will also be needed if/when you want to change your name or open a joint checking account with your husband before being a PR.

sorry didnt mean to mislead anyone. wat i meant to say was in my state they told us our marriage certificate was only good to use as something to frame, and only the marriage record could be used for legal purposes, however cic refused our marriage record, and asked us for the certificate. I guess different states have different laws about it. Anyways your advise is great, and certainly the right way to go. Thanks for enlightening me. Much appreciated

the marriage record is probably the same thing as a marriage certificate. it is the notarized, legal document from the municipality that recorded the marriage. in the US, a fancy certificate such as the one you posted is not usually considered a legal document, while the one in Canada that looks similar to this (I believe it's the short form) is. yes, i'm sure all states have different terminology. in CT, the paper says "marriage certificate and marriage license".

I have one from my state and it says 'Marriage License and Certificate of civil marriage' basically its the same document ( marriage license) hubby and I signed but with a signature of the JP that married us, the date and a raised seal and date when the town clerk reported it but it is on a special security printed paper.
