On a flight to the USA 5 years ago, my flight was redirected to Toronto due to bad weather. I (and many others on my flight) had no Canadian visa and we were made to sign “Allowed to Leave” forms that stated we withdrew our application to enter Canada when we disembarked the plane. I left the next morning on the soonest flight that the airline could arrange.

Now I would like to apply for a visitor’s visa and I don’t know whether to say YES to the question whether I have ever been denied entry/ordered to leave Canada.

Any advice or similar past experiences?

You must answer 'Yes' and provide an explanation + evidence of that entry/flight.

That said, in your case. this was a technical/administrative process because you did not have a valid visa to enter. Your entry denied situation is not the same as a TRV/eTA holder being turned back from the port of entry
