Is it ok to buy tickets one way? Just to enter canada, or the immigration officer will ask for return ticket as proof?

thanks

It is all up to the CBSA officer at the point of entry. Several scenarios can happen:

- They won't care
- They will ask for return date with no proof.
- They will ask for return date with proof.

If you fail to show proof you risk from a simple warning to a refusal.

1. It is quite possible that the airline will not board you as a visitor without a return ticket, as it will then be their responsibility to return you if you are refused admission.

How about with an onward ticket to a destination outside Canada?

Usual process if you get bounced at the POE is you return to the origin of the trip...onward ticket would be ok if your final destination country is one where you have some form of residence status be it short term or long term or even better citizenship as you could be bounced onwards by the airline...if you are still a visitor in the 3rd country then airline will be skittish.
