Hi everybody,

I'm planning on sponsoring my mother-in-law with the intention of her living here if she likes it here (and we all get along!) The catch is that her son who lives with her is only 13, so he would have to come too.

I'm wondering if we should be sponsoring them as visitors, or should we skip that step entirely and just go to PR? And if they come here as visitors, would it be possible to have the 13-year-old attend school here, or does he need to be a PR to attend school?

We are also hearing that the parental sponsorship program is changing. Does anyone know if we can sponsor my mother-in-law under this program, and put the 13-year-old as an additional as her dependent?

Thanks in advance!

you can apply for visitor visa...which allows stay for 6 months.....or you and your spouse if meet the requirement sponsor her and in the sponsorship application include the 13 year child as her dependent child.

check IRCC for 2019 parents sponsorship details...which are yet to be released.

If they come here as visitors the 13 year old will need a study permit to attend school. As an international student, he will have to pay approximately $15K per year to attend a public high school (more for a private high school).
