Hi there,

1st of all, thank you for reading my post.

Basically my student visa will be expiring on the 30th March 2013. I came to Canada in 2011, via student visa and studied at Langara College in Vancouver for a semester before transferring to University of British Columbia. I am now a 2nd year UBC student.

I have already submitted my application to extend my student visa online through the CIC website and currently awaiting their reply to whether or not my extension is granted or denied (hopefully granted). Thing is my passport was expiring in October 2013 and I was recommended to get a new passport 1st before applying for my student visa thus the late application.

I understand I will have *implied status* while my application is in process. However, I was wondering if it is possible for me to exit Canada before CIC gives me an answer as I am hoping to travel to Seattle for the long weekend.

Apart from that, I have also booked my plane ticket home on the 23rd of April, after my exams. So i am hoping that CIC gives me an answer before 23rd of April which they should considering the fact that processing time on their website states 28 days. However, does the 28 days include weekends or are those exclusively office days?

Another, what are the chances that my application is denied, cause that would be quite the hassle. I have been doing a lot of research and it seems that some students are getting denied of their student visa extension and thus the reason I am writing this post. I am currently only a student in UBC taking 3 courses per semester (i have transfer credits) and taking 1 or 2 summer courses. I have never worked in Canada and don't intend to either. However, one thing I am unsure of is the fact that my father has bought an apartment in UBC area for me (living alone) to stay instead of paying rent. I was open about this to CIC as i submitted my bank statements etc. Will this in anyway affect my chances? I am hoping they do not think that I intend to stay in Canada illegally after graduation just because of the property.

My last and most important question is do i still need to apply for TRV? Currently i have applied for a Student Permit Extension but my Canadian Visa is also expiring on the same date which my study permit expires which is 30th March 2013.

I have checked the CIC website and it recommends that I should only apply for VISA after i receive my new Study Permit. I am pretty confused and panicking right now as I just realised that I may need to apply for a VISA as well and not just a Study Permit.

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

1. Don't travel outside in implied status. If you do so, you can't enter Canada again.
2. I submitted the extension on 23rd Feb online , And according to processing time . I will receive it on 1 week of april.
And if you receive your Study permit on time, still you can't travel because your student visa is expired.
3.You can apply for student visa when you get your permit. Processing time is around 20 days.
4. If you have LOA and good academic standing, Then you don't have to worry about extension.
5. We are given Study permit to study full-time in all semesters whether its summer or fall.
You need take at least 12 credits to be full-time student. So never go part-time. This may affect your PGWP.
6. You will be granted study permit till October, 2013. So you will have to apply again with new passport.
7. Don't worry about the apartment , it has nothing to do. But don't go part-time.

Good Luck

Thanks so much for the reply Aman Singh.

Greatly appreciate your replies.
However, i was wondering if it is ok if i travel out after receiving my study permit and then just apply for the Temporary Resident's Visa in a designated country eg, Singapore. It seems that the processing time in Indonesia and Singapore are much shorter than applying it within Canada. I am guessing it is no different than applying within Canada.

Another question, Is it ok for me to travel to the US? I was told by a friend that i do not require a TRV to travel CAN-US (vice-versa) if i have a valid student permit.

Thanks again for reading

Few days back , A girl TRV was rejected from home country. But still she holds valid Study permit.
So don't take risk, Apply in Canada.
For States I'm not sure. Better you call CIC and ask them or wait for other seniors to help you.
According to me, you can't travel to States without TRV.

Good Luck.

1. If your SP is valid, you can enter Canada from US without TRV. A travel must originate from USA.

Thanks for the reply again Aman Singh,

I have called the Canadian CIC as well as Canadian Embassy in Indonesia, both tell me it doesnt make much of a difference where i apply but as you mentioned, there is the risk that my application may be rejected in Indonesia meaning that I am no longer able to enter Canada before my summer classes start. But CIC Canada would require almost a month to process my TRV and even then, rejection may still occur but i would just need to re apply for another TRV as long as my student visa is granted.

On the other hand, when i spoke to the Canadian Embassy in Indonesia, they told me that it only takes 5 working days and maybe even faster and as long as my papers are in correct form and properly answered, I should receive my TRV in Indonesia as well.

I know this is starting to become a rant of my own confusion on whether to return therefore applying in Indonesia or just apply it in Canada.
Anyways, Thank you so much for the replies Aman. I will definitely keep what you mentioned in mind when i make my decision.

Thanks for the reply Enfield,

With regards to your answer, does that apply to ppl who have sent their application in as well?

Eg, my study permit expires this 30th March 2013 and i have already sent in my online application to the CIC. I am assuming my SP is still valid so if i was to travel in and out of canada before the 30th, i should still be allowed in right? and my decision to go for a day trip to the US will not cancel my application?

Yes, You can definitely apply for TRV outside. Don't worry .

This is the case, which i was talking about.
She had bad records in studies. I think that was the reason for her TRV rejection.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply again Aman Singh,

really appreciate you replying to my queries.

I read the link you posted. I definitely do not want to be in her situation.
On the other hand, i have always been a full time student (though i am only taking 3 courses per semester instead of the full 5) and my grades are probably about average (above 65), so I am hoping i don't land in the same situation as her. But even if i do, it would just mean that i would miss my summer courses.

I think i'll take my chances and apply in Indonesia, and since it only takes 5 days, i can probably reapply and still make it in time for summer courses.

Thanks again for your kind help Aman.
