Has anyone had experience with adopting abroad after getting permanence residency? Does the couple have to apply for a visa for the child -- enduring another long process?

Hi Toby, I think you need to start here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/adoption/index.asp

CIC's website indicates that yes, you will have to go through the sponsorship process as the child would not be a Canadian Citizen.

In all international adoptions there are separate processes:
•the adoption process; and
•the immigration or citizenship process.
You need to understand both of these processes.

You and your adopted child must complete both processes before you can bring the child to live with you in Canada.

If one parent is a Canadian citizen, the adopted child can go through the citizenship process, rather than the immigration process. I believe applying for citizenship of the adopted child would be faster than sponsoring him or her.

Correct, sorry I should have elborated. It will also depend on how you got your citizenship as if you got it through ascention of your family, you follow the same rules of anyone who has had a naturally born child.

Wah!!!! SO much paperwork.

I understand the reason underlying the Hague Convention to protect children from being trafficked, but the lamentable fact is that once bureaucratic good intentions come in the door, to regulate conduct between to consenting adults, common sense often flies out the window.
