How specific do we have to be in regards to address history and personal history?
I have previously spent a few years backpacking and address's are very sporadic and vague.

Be as specific as possible because this may be used for background checks. You can always use "Letter of Explanation" to explain that you were backpacking and addresses might not be exact.

As far as possible stick to your permanent address. Few days trips can be excluded. If you have changed cities, mention that.

LOE is simple letter signed by you wherein you can explain situations which you feels require further clarifactions to the assessing officer. Its not compulsory thing.

Yes, that is correct. LOE not compulsory thing. As you are telling you do not have exact addresses, LOE is one way to clarify your point to CIC. This is why I suggested it.
