Adding a PR/Citizen Spouse to my PR application

When will be best time to raise a webform on my PR application to inform IRCC about a marriage to a Canadian PR partner (*Post AOR* OR *After biometrics but before PPR* OR *After COPR but before landing in Canada *?)

Context: I applied as a single applicant. Then I just recently got married to my partner who is a Canadian PR, and now I’m wondering when will is the best time to update IRCC about my marital status change and to avoid any complications or delays in my application.

Will I also have to provide POF for a family of 2 considering my partner is living in Canada and I will be moving in with him?

Has anyone gone through this or has any helpful advice. I’ll appreciate some. Thank you!

There isn't a best time to choose. The answer is now.
Marital status is something you have to keep updated while the file is open. Your COPR is issued based on what IRCC has on record, and landing on a COPR that says single when you're actually married is where people get into real trouble. The later you tell them, the worse it looks.
So send a web form now with your application number, the date of marriage, and your marriage certificate. They'll tell you what else they want, usually updated forms and your spouse's details. Since he's already a PR, he isn't being examined as your dependant, so it's mostly paperwork.
On proof of funds, yes, unfortunately. IRCC's page says you count your spouse even if they're already a PR or citizen, so your requirement goes up to the figure for two people. Check the current table since it's updated every July.
That only applies if you're FSW. If you applied under CEC, or you have a valid job offer and are authorised to work in Canada, you don't need proof of funds at all.

You should update IRCC as soon as possible after the marriage, rather than waiting for biometrics, PPR, COPR, or landing.


Marriage is considered an important change in personal/family circumstances, and IRCC asks applicants to report changes such as marriage through the web form and provide supporting documents.


Since your spouse is already a Canadian permanent resident, they would normally be listed as your spouse but not as an accompanying applicant for PR.


Regarding proof of funds, if your Express Entry program requires settlement funds, IRCC says your family size includes your spouse even if the spouse is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. So, if POF applies to your program, you would generally calculate it for a family of 2.


If you applied under CEC, or you otherwise fall under an exemption from proof of funds, then the POF requirement may not apply.


I would not wait until COPR or landing to report the marriage.

I applied under FSW

Then proof of funds applies, and your requirement is now the figure for two people. Two things to get right.
First, make sure you can show the higher amount before you send the web form, or at least soon after. Officers assess funds at the time of the decision, not at ITA, so being short later is what causes refusals.
Second, your husband's money doesn't count as your funds. The funds have to be yours, available, and transferable. If he gives you money, it has to be in your name with a clear transfer and a gift letter, and it needs to sit there rather than arrive the week before a request.
If the marriage means you now qualify to apply another way, that's worth a look too. But for this application, plan for a family of two.
