@Steaky,

I have some qs before landing.. please help me out to get clarified

Can I book hotel rooms for the first week to attend my orientation program. If possible, how much the lowest cost for that?

My money is going to be credited in my account(loan) this week. How do i convert my money from INR to CAD before landing?

Once I reach Toronto, is that possible to search any rooms in hotel? or I should book earlier?

My classes starts from Sep 7. I think I can find a guy who is my department in orientation program and plan to stay together. My q is, how soon I can get a room once I landed over there?

awaiting your answers..

guys, If you have any suggestions plz pour on..

Since I am the new one going outside of my country, I have pile of qs..

It's hard to say whether cheap hotel rooms are available during your first week of orientation. I always use www.tripadvisor.com for searching canadian hotel. You might try that as well yourself.

As an alternative to craiglist, you can actually use the community college link for residence and off campus rental listings:
http://www.humber.ca/content/student-support
After viewing any interested rooms, while you are in your home country, you can actually phone or email the landlord the details and to find out options to get the room immediately after your landing.

I think you should book earlier to secure better rates regardless it is residence, hotel rooms or off campus rental rooms. I think no one wants to be in a desperate situation.

As for currency exchanges, can you set up a canadian HSBC account before you land and convert your INR to CAD?

Feel free to ask me more questions. I would try to answer them.

@ Steaky,

Really nice information.. got many things from you.

For currency exchange, I can have money exchange in my bank itself. After consulting with my friends I concluded that.. so that won't be a big problem..

how about travelers cheque? Someone advised me to take travelers cheque so that can be used while booking hotel and other transportation? How this is differing from having CAD with us?

After currency conversion, I will have 3000-4000 CAD with me right; then Why do I need travelers cheque?

I am not sure about travellers cheque if it is acceptable to every shop and transportation company. Certainly travellers cheque are more safe than cash.

@Steaky,

For the first week, I plan to stay at hotel. Which area would be fine to select a hotel to reach my college (Humber community college - north campus) and in case of cost too?

As I am not familiar of that part of the town, I use google map and the tripadvisor.com to find out that the commute time (by car) between Quality Suites Toronto Airport hotel and your campus is about 11 minutes. The average rates of the hotel is between $77 to $140/nights. It looks like this is the least expensive but please correct me if I am wrong.

But the OP wants to live off campus
I understand. But staying inside is a lot easier, stress free & fascinating option. As I also see, the cost component nearly remains the same.

BTW, I reside just across their North Campus.
