My husband and I are just starting our application. I've been going through my half (the immigration half) of the forms and have been having a bit of trouble. Now my problem is that the guide to completing these forms simply doesn't explain things well enough for me in some cases. If you'll please bear with me, there are a lot of questions that I have. Some of them may seem silly, but I would appreciate any and all help.

Generic Application For for Canada

Application Details:
Question 7: Have you received your Certificat de Sélection du Québec (CSQ)?

-I don't even know what this is. How do I answer this?

Personal Details:
Question 11: Date and place of your last entry to Canada?

-Is there a reason why Adobe won't let me enter the date or place? Is it acceptable for me to later hand write this in?

Education/Occupation Detail:
Question 3-4: Current/Intended Occupation?

-I am currently unemployed and looking for work. What should I put for intended occupation when I'm not sure what opportunities are available just yet? Should my answer just be N/A?

Additional Dependants/Declaration
I assume the answer to this question will be 'no', but I'd like to be certain. My husband and I have no dependants. Does this section still need to be signed/included, even if it's blank? Or must I slap an N/A in the first box, sign it and include it just to be safe?

Schedule A Background/Declaration
Question 4: Personal details of your father.
-I'm assuming this needs to be my biological father and not my step father. My problem here, though, is that my marriage license lists him as unknown. Since that was purely for genealogical purposes and the woman at the courthouse told me I could list him as unknown and it wouldn't matter, I didn't want to be associated with him. It seemed the best way to deal with it because he's always disputed that I am his daughter and I'm completely fine with never calling him my father. However, he is listed on my birth certificate as my father. Will this cause a problem with our application? If I could leave him off this application, I would, but that would be lying on my part.

Additional Family Information
Section A
I have no idea where my father currently lives. I'm not even sure if he's still married. I don't even have a way to contact him. How do I go about filling out his section? Is a city and state good enough for the address?

Section C
I have no idea if I have any half-brothers, half-sisters, or step-sisters. If I do, I have no idea where they live. I have no contact with my father's side of the family, so is it okay to only list the siblings that I am aware of having?

Questionnaire
Question 4: Did you give your sponsor any gifts?
-How specific do I need to be? I've gifted my husband several video games. Do I have to list each one separately, or is 'video games' fine?
Question 8: Do you have family members or other relatives living in Canada?
-This doesn't include my in-laws, does it?

Use of a Representative
My husband and I don't plan on using a sponsor. Does this section still need signed and included?

If you've stuck with me this long, I thank you. I only have one more question. When the forms say to attach additional pages for more space, does this mean that I have to use a copy of the same page of the form, or can I type something up in Microsoft Word and attach it?

I can answer some.

If you are not destined for Quebec, ignore the question.

If you cannot enter a field, it doesn't need entering. Leave it blank.

Occupation should be generic, such as teacher or office worker. You don't need a specific target

As zardoz said, if you're not moving to Quebec, you don't need the CSQ. If you are moving to Quebec, go here http://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/immigrate-settle/students/stay-quebec/application-csq/index.html

I don't know why Adobe won't let you enter it in. I remember that I had issues when switching between open pages, I'd have to click on the actual field several times once I switched back to it. If you can't enter it and the form still allows you to validate, then write it in by hand. If you aren't able to validate, you may have to completely close it down and start the form again.

For intended occupation, if you have any college or university, put down your field of study. If not, put something that relates to your previous work history, ie. customer service, admin work, waitress.

We completely removed the dependents section and put on our additional page "Removed section as I have no dependents".

Put your biological father's name on the app. My partner grew up in care and knew NOTHING about his parents except their names. We put the info that we knew, and then on an additional page, explained that he has had not contact with his parents since he was a toddler and doesn't know whether either of them is even still alive, let alone their addresses, marital statues etc. With the siblings, list the ones you know about and don't even mention the possibility of others (same as us, my partner has been told he has several other siblings but knows nothing about them and has no way to find out)

For the gifts, no need to be specific. Video games, clothes, jewellery, just saying that is fine

In-laws aren't included, it's just asking about your family.

If you're not using a rep, don't include it

Thank you very much! I've been stressing and over analyzing every last question for days now, and it's good to have some answers. Perhaps I can actually finish the application now. Much appreciated, thank you both!

It is a very stressful process! Good luck on finishing the application :)

and to answer the last question - you can type any explanation in word, as long as you clearly reference the form/question/name of the applicant that it refers to, it's all good!
And yes - it's a stressful process, and quite overwhelming at the beginning, but it gets better, and you can always ask questions here... and before you know it, you'll be the one answering questions from others! ;-)
Good luck with your application,
Sweden

The PDF document is semi-intelligent. There are parts of it that if you answer with a specific drop down menu response, the rest of that section is locked out. I've experimented with some examples but not extensively.

Hi,

I can add additional info.

If you a question doesn't apply, write "not applicable" or "NA". Don't leave it blank as CIC will assume you forgot to answer and will return your application deeming it is incomplete.

Regarding family questions, if you have no contact for several years if ever or don't know particulars about family, simply write "unknown" on the application. But also add a separate sheet where you explain why you don't know - such as you have never had contact with this side of the family, estranged, etc. DOn't forget to include your name and DOB at top of this supplementary page as well as the question # your are responding to.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, everyone! I really appreciate the help. I'm ever so slightly less worried. :)

Hi Migrain,

My husband is Canadian and I am filling out my forms as well. I have a few of the same questions as you but I have one answer.

Question 4: Did you give your sponsor any gifts?
-How specific do I need to be? I've gifted my husband several video games. Do I have to list each one separately, or is 'video games' fine?

ANSWER: If you scroll up a little ways you will see that questions 2-6 refer to your first meeting. This question is asking if you gave him any gifts at your first meeting (for example, a dowry in an arranged marriage), NOT if you have given him any gifts ever.

As for the rest of the questions, I also am having a VERY HARD time filing things out via the computer and probably will have to do some of it by hand. I hope its okay but can't find any information about it and some questions just will not work for me.

The relatives in Canada one is really confusing me also....

Thanks for your questions

As I said before, if you cannot answer a question because the document will not allow you to type into a filed, you probably can ignore it completely. The barcode generation and form validation will not contain any of the data that you try to insert by hand. You really don't need to second-guess the PDF document as long as you are using a recent copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader to input the data. It was made to be easy to use...
