Hi,

I am currently on a 1-year program and I expect to finish the winter semester if I don't do the optional co-op.

I was able to get an offer for a second program and it starts in late summer (July to August). The second program is 10 months.

I would like to know if starting late summer might affect the length of the PGWP I will be asking when I apply for it?. Will I still be eligible for a 3-year PGWP?

1st program: https://www.algonquincollege.com/sat/program/business-intelligence-system-infrastructure/

2nd program: https://www.ufv.ca/data-analysis-post-degree/

You are not clearing anything here. Mention exact time your first course finishes ? When your second program starts? You were at public colleges during your both courses ?

From what I read and understand about PGWP, your previous program has to be within last 2 years. So if you take a summer break you are good to get a 3 year PGWP but you most likely cannot work during summer(I am not 100% sure but that's what it looks like).
You can remain in Canada as a student between April-August/Sept. whenever your new course starts till the time you manage to get your study permit extended if it's not already done.
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...mits/post-graduation-work-permit-program.html

  • If a student obtained a 1-year degree, diploma or certificate from an eligible institution in Canada after having obtained, within the prior 2 years, another degree, diploma or certificate from an eligible institution in Canada, the duration of the work permit may be up to 3 years.
If he finishes his first program at DLI and his second program is starting after next 150 days or 4 months then he has to apply for study permit extension based on second program within 90 days after successfully completing first program. Then for first 150 days he can work on SIN legally. But make sure you are attending public colleges.

I was at a International student info session at Humber and they addressed this issue, they said you can work full time between programs if you have the new LOA even if your first program ends in April and the next one is in September you can work full time between.

They just said be sure you dont change your mind about starting the new program after working all that time.

Just to clarify something. Is a 10 month program considered as 1+ academic year ?

It depends what your offer letter says. If it says your program is of 1 academic year then yes it is considered as 1 one year regardless of months. If it says 10 months then your work permit would be of same duration as that of your study program.
