Dear All,
I will be applying a FSW application this year under NOC 2171. My current title is Senior Manager - IT Specialist and i will be able to get a reference letter stating all the duties that are in line with the NOC 2171 description. Would the title cause me a problem since their is a separate NOC for the same title but different duties?

Appreciate your input on the above.

I think yes, Senior manager is different from IT Analyst

Be very careful about submitting you designation and job description for a particular category. It is not always true that you need to be in a specific designation set to qualify for a category, different organizations have different way of dealing with designations!

I would say go ahead and apply, but make sure about mentioning it somewhere that your duties are matching or in sync with the category that you are applying for.

Thank you very much for the response. To have things make more sense, i am mentioning in my reference letter my promotion history which started as a consultant before reaching to a senior manager. This way, worst case scenario, they can consider the initial years of my employment if the title creates a confusion. I am also specifying that my project experience, for all levels i have been through, has been focused on a set of duties which are in line with the NOC description.

True. That would make more sense. Provide them enough details to justify discrepancy in your job title and duties.

I would still suggest against it, try to capitalize on your most recent experience, try for some managerial category. Most importantly CIC officials should be convinced that you are perfect fit for the category you are applying, I mean logically it doesn't make sense that a Senior Manager will work as an Analyst after landing in Canada. Try to convince them based on your current strength as manager and it will make your life easier as you will be able to easily convince them for the work that you are already doing with ease and expertise. Taking a step back in career does not make logical sense. Think twice before applying under any category that does not fit your current/most recent experience as you will have to depend on CIC official's mercy.

All the best for your application.

Interesting point. But based on what he described at the beginning of this thread, it looks like he has a designation of a manager but his actual job duties are of an analyst. Make sense now?

to me it seems you are under:
0213 Computer and information systems managers

the best would be remove the manager tittle if possible..

Thanks for the interesting points.

Although my current title and designation is managerial, before reaching to that level, i did act as a consultant for a few years where i executed the same exact duties mentioned in 2171. The only difference is that now, i don't do these duties as much as i manage them. Moreover, in one of the CIC suggested titles under NOC 2171, is an IT Consulting account manager which in a way very close to my current title. This NOC it has to do more with projects experience rather than daily responsibilities and duties. My current project experience is exactly as described under this NOC with the only difference is the role i am playing in those project which can differ from one to another.

I have added a statement in the reference letter sating the different levels i have been through and in which years. The job description and the duties i have been doing, i summarized them as project experience rather than daily duties. Worst case scenario, they can ignore my managerial years and count the first a few years which still fall within the last 10 years. I am also doing good in terms of the number of points i collected and deducting a few years from my work experience won't harm much.

I would still be very interested to hear from the members, based on their experience, if the above makes sense. I really see this NOC to be the perfect fit. If it was a managerial NOC, then the challenge would have been to demonstrate the long number of years in the managerial position and not the total number of work experience years.

i am thankful to all for your time and suggestions.
