A bit of Background - I came to Canada as a Masters student and right now on PGWP set to end in 6 months. I work a full time tech job.

My employer wants to know what my plans are post 6 months and is offering to sponsor closed work permit once my open work permit ends.

How do I go about this ? Can anyone explain how this would work and when I/employer needs to drop a closed work permit application for me ?

What is your citizenship? Your employer needs to go through the LMIA process. First, post your job and prove no Canadian has the work experience, education and language skills to do the job. Job must be posted for at least a month on multiple sites. Must be high wage. Then file and pay for LMIA. If approved you can apply for closed work permit showing you are the only person who can do the job.

So employer must read through LMIA requirements and see if eligible. Some employers wait up to a year for a LMIA.
