A colleague on implied status for work permit had to see a doctor urgently. Will she be able to claim reimbursement for the amount spent on doctor’s fee/medicines once she is issued a work permit and OHIP card? She has maintained her TRP status.

Impossible to say.

Not medicine . Since OHIP doesn’t cover prescriptions

Prescriptions you’d have to claim under your private insurance

You can get OHIP on implied/maintained status as long as you provide proof of full-time employment and the WP-ext letter is still valid.

You must also meet at least 1 of the following additional requirements. You:
  • are in Ontario on a valid work permit and are working full-timein Ontario, for an Ontario employer, for at least 6 months
    • if you meet this requirement, your spouse and dependants may also qualify for OHIP
    • if your work permit has expired but you hold “maintained status”, you may be eligible (please contact ServiceOntario for further information)

They are on TRP so this may complicate things. They should certainly attempt but realize there are no guarantees of reimbursement of MD fees and Rxs shouldn’t have been covered to begin with through OHIP. If they have private insurance through their employer may be not be possible to get reimbursed retroactively because the policy would have been void during filling of the Rx because they didn’t have OHIP at the time.
