Is it okay not making any application after graduation?

Hi,
I will be graduating soon and I haven't received my study permit application yet which I submitted 6 months ago. Even though I can apply for PGWP under implied status (my last SP expired on March 31st), I just want to know is it okay, immigration and rule wise, not to apply for permit (but stop working part time the day grades are released) and wait for the SP extension to be issued? Then I can make my PGWP appl. and start working. Am I thinking right or do I really need to apply for a permit such as visitor extension to legally remain in Canada.

You could remain on implied status as a student and wait for your SP extension to be approved, but there's no real benefit vs. just applying for the PGWP and waiting for that. Either way you will have to wait a certain amount of time before you resume working.

If the SP extension is issued after applying for PGWP under implied status, I won't be able to work until the PGWP is issued. That could sometimes mean waiting for a few weeks the SP is issued or waiting for few months for the work permit to be issued. So yes, there are benefits of waiting vs just applying for the PGWP. But if there is no issue an international student can remain in Canada after finishing studies without applying for any kind of permit, it is better for the SP extension to arrive and apply for PGWP since then they can start working immediately after making the application.

Sure, if you assume the SP extension will be issued shortly after applying for the PGWP, but you could just as easily end up waiting longer for the SP extension than if you just applied for the PGWP directly. Either way, there is a waiting period.

You can theoretically remain in Canada under implied status on your SP extension application as long as it takes to get it, though if you are no longer studying it might be safest to apply for a visitor record as well.

By going through the forums I have been reading that people applied in January without any biometrics- these applicants permits are getting processed now. May be end of September, Feb applicants might be processed (all are guesstimate). If that is the case, it will coincide with the end of my all available leave from my employer and I can resume working as soon as I make my PGWP appl. I understand this is still a long shot but the average highest processing time for any person to wait for their permit is like 7-8 months (though there are exceptional cases where someone had to wait for an year).

My other thinking is that IRCC may not bother issue SP extension anymore because it may be pointless for applicants like me who is finishing studies soon. May be they are expecting me to make the Work permit appl. under implied status. If that is the case, then waiting will become meaningless. But I do hear people getting their extension approved after finishing their studies.

So I guess I have to gamble.

This is the first time in the last 6 months something like this happened. Staying hopeful!

That's great!! really happy for you! I applied in March so I hope to get an update soon. :)

Me too just today. I applied the 7th february with no biometrics.
