Just received an email from IRCC. Has anyone received something like this? what is it?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is conducting and evaluation to better understand the experiences of newcomers to Canada in learning and using English and French. IRCC is looking for participants to help with this project.

Volunteers willing to participate in this project will have to be available two full days (from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm), one in March, and another in July. During both days, participants will be asked to complete tests to assess four English language competencies: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The first testing date is Saturday March 30 2019, and the second testing date is Saturday July 20 2019. Volunteers must be available to attend both test sessions. Test will be held at the Toronto District School Board located at 1470 Don Mills Rd., 2nd floor, Toronto (ON), M3B 2X9. IRCC is working with the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks on this project and they are responsible for the test administration.

As a thank you, participants will receive a $50 Loblaws gift card for attending the first test on March 30th, and a $100 Loblaws gift card for attending the second test on July 20th.

To register for the test, please go to the following website: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/understanding-language-progression-4-ircc-evaluation-toronto-tickets-59007323493.

Please do not forward this link to others as participation to this event is by invitation only.

Your participation in this project is extremely important. The results of this exercise will be used to improve language training services for immigrants in the future.

If you agree to participate, your answers will be combined with information that you provided to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada previously. All personal information collected during the test will be confidential and your participation will not affect your immigration file or any services you receive.

Please note that no results will be given to participants. However, it provides participants with the opportunity to practice a variety of test questions in a test setting.

Thank you for you participation to this very important initiative.

I read somewhere that Canada's applications processing time is EXTREMELY and abnormally slower compared to other countries like USA, Australia, etc... I wonder why.. :(

US is also very location specific but some numbers (from https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/):
Washington DC: 10.5 to 15 months
Seattle: 17.5 to 21 months
San Francisco: 14.5 to 16.5 months
Portland, OR: 7 to 9.5 months
Brooklyn: 15 to 20.5 months

Any major city will have at least a year wait. Not really different from the 12 months CIC claims.

the primary reason is it takes at least a decade to become a US citizen so obviously less traffic, whereas In Canada it takes only 3 years post-landing. look at the bigger picture if you were in US forget about citizenship you one does not get green card in 3 years

I applied from North York and here are my timelines:
Received: Nov 7 2018
AOR: Jan 22 2019
In Progress: Jan 25 2019

I sent a web form request inquiring about the 'processing office' for my application and got a reply in 4 business days, that it is @ Scarborough. Personally I found the web form very effective to reach CIC, compared to the call center (if you are prepared to wait that is):

Thank you for contacting Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

We are happy to provide you with information that will help you understand the current status of your Application for Canadian Citizenship - Adults.

Your application is currently at the IRCC office in Scarborough. This office is verifying if you meet the eligibility requirements to be granted Canadian citizenship. Rest assured that you will be contacted if additional information is needed.

The next step will be to invite you to attend the citizenship test. The local office will schedule an appointment for you in due course, if necessary.

We recommend that you verify the e-Client Application Status (e-CAS) online tool regularly to see when a new notice is sent to you.

We hope the information provided is helpful in assisting you with your enquiry.

We would also like to suggest the following online services that might be helpful to you with any immigration, refugee and/or citizenship future requests:
