WES assessment question...is it wrong?

Hi all

I've had my WES assessment back. I have a Law Degree (Bachelor). I intend to apply under the 'Masters or degree for entry into regulated profession' category as obviously law is a regulated profession. But the WES report has equated my degree to Bachelor.

Is this an issue? It technically is a Bachelor of course but I need the degree to be a lawyer, which is a regulated profession.

Anyone had this issue?

Any help with this?

If your degree counts as one which enters you into a profession that is regulated, would the WES report say this?

Thanks

As per my knowledge, any regulated profession you have to take the preparation in Canada. I have a friend who was CPA in her country but was not valid when getting to Canada, the Accountants institution have their test system to be approved as such in Canada.

In your case, Canadian Bar of Lawyers would have their test system to approve you as a laywer in Canada.

WES wouln´t provide that equivalence, they are not the correct institution for that. Feel happy for having the Bachelor´s degree recognized

Thanks, but a degree that is required for a regulated profession is just that. Law is a regulated profession, a law degree is a degree that is required to enter that profession. Why would that not be classed as a degree that is required for a regulated profession!?

Totally confused about which classification to choose on my EE application. I feel entitled to the 'masters...etc' classification.

Can any Lawyers/accountants etc shed any light?

CANADA
Category........
Visa Office......
Ottwa
Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
If you have not completed Law from CANADA, You cannot Practice it here. So WES cannot certify this as “regulated profession” and they will match it as normal bachelor degree :D

hi bairn7, im currently going through the same dilemma, i had my LLB assessed by WES with the same result. they however added a remark that my Bachelors of Law is the first professional degree required to practice Law in Nigeria and it represents the completion of a 3year professional study in a common law jurisdiction. this is so confusing especially as my canadian equivalent still states "bachelors degree (four years)" :-[
So i was wondering if you could share your experience and how it eventually turned out for you.

Let me copy paste my answer to similar question on another thread. I hope this helps clarify. Here it goes ----

I think I can answer your question.
Graduates of law in any country outside of Canada are not allowed to register in bar in any state in Canada and therefore cannot practice before the courts. The foreign law graduates need to get the assessment done from National Committee on Accreditation. As a graduate of law from Anglo Saxon country in all probabilities your degree will be assessed equivalent to Canadian law, but with stipulation that you complete six law courses related to Canada (such as procedural code, constitution etc.). For this you can either enroll in classes which are approved by NCA or you can write exams conducted by NCA round the year.

Thus, due to above mentioned reasons, your law degree will be considered at best a Bachelors degree, because you will not be able to practice law in Canada unless you get your degree assessed by NCA and qualify the mandatory six subjects (other conditions may be there by NCA).

I hope this answers your concern and query. For more information on NCA assessment you can check NCA website (Google it - National Committee on Accreditation, Canada)

I would also recommend you to get your degree assessment process initiated while you are here in India, as it would be easier to sent transcripts from school to NCA directly. Furthermore, you can study the six compulsory subjects through distance learning also. So when you reach Canada your degree is recognized by NCA, or at least you spend less time to get it recognized by NCA.

All the best!

Okay thanks for taking out your time to answer. I'm already looking into the NCA process. However I think that IQAS gives a favourable ECA for law degrees from India and Nig. I'm currently being assessed by IQAS will let you know how it turns out.

NB: I do not think WES' assessment is right...others with Medical degrees also have to pursue licensure...but it is still assessed as the first professional degree. Also CIC intended those marks for those with foreign degrees not licensure. A JD is a first professional degree not a registration with a licensing body/registration certificate.

Apparently i cant get the same marks as i calculated with the mess WES made of my ECA....so its best to wait till IQAS concludes its assessment, then i'll move on....depending on d outcome of the assessment (which i hope is positive).

Hi guys,
I have received my ECA from WES today. For my three year LL.B. Degree in India, which I completed after completing four years of Bachelor of Technology degree, I have received the following in my WES ECA Report:

Canadian Equivalency: Bachelor of Laws/ Juris Doctor.

No other special remarks are mentioned on the report. Hope this helps and brings some more clarity to the issue.

Best, RV

this only goes to show that ive been right all along...seems the only thing WES recognizes as a law degree is the graduate Law degree....which is totally wrong, because in my country law is studied for 5 years and a year of further studies before you can be admitted to practice :-[
