Yes, given that it is related to the NOC code, self-employment counts. You will need to submit your tax certificate, bank transactions, and reference letters from your clients indicating how many hours of work was put in.

Well, actually his status sounds more like an employee then. In that case, he will need to show payrolls and other documents that clearly indicate his occupation as a sales manager, because self-declared positions are not taken into account, as far as I know. Of course, there may be more knowledgeable people on this forum to comment on this, and I am sure they will. In the meantime, I would suggest you to read all the instructions on CIC website. I am sure that will give you a very clear idea of what your husband should do.

This is a link to FSW 2014 Document Checklist: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5612E.pdf

Please bear in mind that the system has changed so the above link is not valid anymore, however, the rules for proving work experience still apply (correct me if I am wrong). Here is the relevant part for you:

Work Experience
For the principal applicant:
• Letters of reference from all your employers for the past 10 years.
Letters must be:
• written on company letterhead,
• signed by the responsible officer/supervisor,
• show the company's full address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and website addresses,
• stamped with the company's official seal (if applicable).
Letters must include all of the following information:
• the specific period of your employment with the company,
• the positions you have held during the period of employment and the time you spent in each position,
• your main responsibilities and duties in each position,
• your total annual salary plus benefits in each position, and
• the number of hours worked per week in each position.
• Additional supporting documents may include:
• copies of work contracts, and
• copies of pay stubs.
If you and/or your accompanying spouse or common-law partner have engaged in full-time work in Canada,
with appropriate authorization, for a period of at least one year in the past 10 years, provide:
• letter(s) of reference (as per requirements stated above) from your past Canadian employer(s),
• a copy of any T4s if available,
• a copy of the employment authorization.
Important: when submitting your tax information, be sure to black out your Social Insurance Number (SIN) to protect
this personal information.
Note: Self-employed individuals must provide documentation from 3rd party individual(s) indicating the service
provided along with payment details. Self-declared main duties or affidavits are not acceptable evidence of
work experience.

No problem at all. I wish you all the best. Just one more note; it is important to be able to show that the money received at the bank was for the services as sales manager. CIC agents should clearly be able to link the two. Otherwise they may not be convinced. For example, let's say Company A made a wire transfer to your husband's bank account for his services. It would be ideal to have a reference letter from Company A. This way CIC agents looking into your file will see that Company A sent money + Company A gave a reference letter. Then they won't have any questions in their mind. And of course these transactions should be ongoing for the amount of time you claimed points for while creating your EE profile, and should be proven by a detailed bank statement.

Being a self-employed person myself, last year, my application was rejected due to this issue I mention above. I had 9 reference letters from my clients, and all of them declared since when and for how many hours I had been working for them, and how much they paid me in return for my services. But because I haven't submitted bank statements detailing every transaction for the last 6 years I claimed to be working, CIC rejected my application. They did not find client declaration convincing enough. This is something you should be very careful about.

@pinkyshah and @haznac

I'm glad to have found this topic, as I'm really confused. Kindly guide:

So the scenario is such:
I've a total of 8.5 years of experience
1. 4.5 yrs in HR (out of which 3 was self-employed- I owned a franchise of a company)
2. 4 years in Business Dev/Marketing - 2 pre and 2 post MBA.

I wish to apply under the 0112- HR professionals at mid-management NOC code. However, if they don't consider my 3 years of Self-employed tenure, I'm just left with 1.5 years of work exp. What do I do? I can provide the franchise contract and my company invoices, regular taxes filed as it was a Pvt Ltd company.

I read Haznac was rejected, what did you do then? what's your current status?

Please feel free to reach me directly as well.

Kindly guide.

Thanks Haznac! I am in the same situation. I was recollecting reference letters from clients, so i guess i should add a bank statements from all payments for each client, right?

For example, i have a client for a year, monthly payments.

I get a reference letter showing what i was doing, hours per week, and fees, then i add 12 bank statements showing each monthly payment.
That should be enough?

Of course also send Business registration, year taxes... and other general documents.

Thanks

One more question, how about the time can't be prove with a letter from clients?

For example i can be spending 20 hours per week with a client, but other 40 promoting my business, paperwork, accounting... how to prove that?

Other example, open a company in August and get first customer that give you +30 hours week work in November. How about the time working from August to November? can't count as work experience?

Thanks
