Having been through hell and having spoken to many others sailing in the same boat, here's a word of sincere advice for Newcomers applying for registration as a Professional Engineer to the Professional Engineers Association of Ontario (PEO). Here goes:

  • Before you decide to apply to PEO, STOP and research the Registration Process for P.Eng. designation in all the other provinces of Canada to enable you to make a decision as to which province has a process that suits you. It is immaterial as to which Province you live in. You can apply for registration to any provincial association regardless of which province you live in
  • If you make the mistake of applying to PEO, you will end up burning your pocket; they will assign numerous technical exams, even though you may have studied all those courses in you degree, or even if you degree is covered under a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between Engineers Canada and the Accrediting Agency in the country where you earned your degree. PEO is the only regulatory authority in Canada which does not accept any MRA
  • If you have North American Work Experience (e.g., US Work Experience in Engineering), there are at least 3 Provinces which will consider that in lieu of Canadian Work Experience. Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Saskatchewan
  • A word of Caution: If you have a US Degree, DO NOT apply to PEO. There are many people in PEO who simply HATE USA and would go to any extent to humiliate anybody or anything even remotely connected to the US...My Real Life Experience
  • You will find that all the associations other than the PEO are very open and extremely courteous and helpful. Compare this to PEO: EXTEMELY RUDE, NASTY and DISCOURTEOUS and NEVER HELPFUL, except to people of their own countries of origin or nationalities
  • If you make the mistake of applying to PEO and they assign you exams; and subsequently you apply to any other association, the latter will always make a decision based on the PEO assessment. So think well before you apply to PEO
  • Once you are registered as a P.Eng. in any one of the Provinces, you can always get P.Eng. in all the other Provinces

Thanks for the guidance Square111.
I'm planning to do PE at Canada (in Mechanical Engineering), But going to land and live at Ontario.

Have few questions to you or any members can advise.

1. For the certified Transcripts and Degree, PEO or other offices only accept WEC verified documents? Or I can submit and show the originals to them?

2. If I will get PE at other provinces, will the employers at Ontario accept as PE? or I need to look for the job only at those provinces?

Thanks in advance.

Dear friends,

I am Mechanical engineer, have B.E degree from India. I do not have US education but I have UK and US experience, each of 3 yrs. Total 10 yrs of experience. I evaluated my credentials by WES and about to land in canada as PR.

As per your knowledge, which province has easy process of getting PR..?

1) Do I need to clear EIT no matter which province for PE..?

2) Is it Ok if I clear EIT from US and transfer it to Canadian Province if EIT is the minimum requirement..?

Guys, can you give me answer of 1st question as that will drive me the process I will have to do to get PE..

Regards,

You need to demonstrate that your qualifications and experience meet or exceed the requirements. This needs to be done for any province where you apply for a P.Eng - the EIT requirement is the same.

Given that you have 3 years of North American experience, but your degree is from India, you can definitely clear the EIT in the US and then transfer to Canada - I did the same, although my education was from the US. APEGA reviewed my transcripts, checked with my references and also confirmed my EIT status in Connecticut (where I had written the exam). I still had to write the ethics exam, which cannot be exempted, but it's not a technical exam - more towards rules, regulations and legislation.

The exam format would probably be the same - unless things have changed a lot in the US, the EIT exam was an 8-hour commitment with a 4-hour general and a 4-hour subject specific exam. It's not easy, that's for sure!

I also got an exemption for the 1-year experience in North America part because I had worked in the US as well. I would think, based on personal experience, that you can expect a similar response.

I am planning to register to APEGBC, and they require my documents from university, all transcripts.

Could someone confirm that they need the attested / certified copies of transcripts to be sent by my university to their office. Or they are asking for originals?

Since my degrees were from the US, where universities do issue original transcripts in sealed envelopes (sometimes at a nominal cost), it was easier to meet the requirements for APEGA (http://www.applyatapega.ca/faqs.html#CanIusecopiesofmytranscriptsthatIhave)

However, my understanding is that some universities in Southeast Asia (India, Pakistan etc), will not issue additional transcripts, but might stamp/attest copies or issue some sort of official confirmation - given the large number of professionals from that part of the world who have their P.Eng, it might be reasonable to assume that attested/certified copies of transcripts can be considered acceptable.

Not sure if my response is relevant to what you are looking for, but maybe calling or emailing them to confirm the exact requirements can be very helpful. Their email address is apeginfo@apeg.bc.ca.

Hi,
I have read the PEO requirements in detail. The photocopy of the degrees from Non- Canadian, USA universities can be submitted provided they are attested by licensed PEng and Notary republic of Canada.

As per above posts, we can apply for P.engg to any province.

I am landing in Toronto in February 2016. New immigrants can register in PEO free of cost provided they apply within 6 months of landing. Now, my question is if we apply in other province and suppose they assign some exam then how can we manage to appear for exam while doing job in Toronto?

I did Engineering (Electrical) from India.

Can anybody guide on this.....
