Hello everyone,

I am from Philippines and planning to come to Canada as a tourist visa with my primary goal to be a resident later. I am working more than 10 years and currently residing in the United Arab Emirates. I have been rejected for Express entry program due to my age as 48. Not sure in this country if providing a work permit to Canada is a legit way, so my option is to come for a visit and later search for a work. I appreciate for those who will answer my queries, is it possible to get a work under tourist visa and what are the option to get a work with this condition living in Nunavut, Manitoba or BC?

Possible, but hard. You need to find an employer willing to apply for LMIA, which means that employer cannot find a citizen or pr or somebody with a valid work permit to hire. Employer then pays CAD1K for the LMIA application. Once approved, you can now apply for a closed work permit with the LMIA.

If you browse the job bank Canada website and filter the search for LMIA approved, most posting will say only those with valid permit will be reviewed.

Realistically, your age is working against you. But it’s not a total impossibility. Chances are remote, however, unless you try other route like studying first. I came here at age 47 back in 2018 as a student. Mayroon pa ring paraan.

Thank you for your reply. Being an IS is also one of my options but according to the feedback for some, working while studying is not enough to fund my education expenses plus support to my family. I am hardly searching a legit agency here in UAE who can support me to get working permit if this is really possible, according to reviews most of them said its fake.

The employment agencies are inside canada and they want a Open Work Permit or PR to offer you a job.
You have only 1 option, that is If you reach Canada and find a employer who is wiling to process your LMIA and he succeed to get a LMIA for you. You will get a closed work permit to work for that employer only.
DO NOT trust any agent or any person claiming that he can get you LMIA or job offer inside UAE, 99.99% of them are frauds. Be Caution.

Yes, working part time while studying is not enough, especially if you are working minimum wage. Rent is very expensive nowadays, and that alone would eat up most of your earnings. Advantage if you have a close relative who are either citizens or PRs who would accommodate you with free rent.

For agencies that offer support to get work permit, think of it this way: every year, there are tens of thousands (and probably more) of IS graduating and getting PGWP. You would have to compete with them, but they already have the advantage of being here as well as having work permits. Not to mention the newly landed PRs.

When I was a student, it took me well into the end of my second semester before i found a prt time job at Timmies.

Thank you for the enlightenment Albloshi, appreciate that. I got also an information if this is possible, being a tourist while searching job some said i can collaborate to someone to buy for this LMIA but my doubt to whom i can trust?

There is nothing like BUY A LMIA. This is not UAE visa. You need to find employer who is willing and can process a LMIA for you.
The process of getting a LMIA is not easy at all. The employer need to convince IRCC that he could not find ANY Canadian or PR or OWP person for this job AND you are the most relevent employee for this job. He need to prove that with your experience, qualifications etc etc.
only then IRCC will issue a LMIA for you. and as i said, its extremely difficult (if we dont call it impossible).
Be extra extra caution with all those agents outside who promise LMIA against money, you will loose money and will get nothing and will not be able to report it as the whole picture is illegal.
Even through if you succeed to get a LMIA by money, the provider can blackmail you to extract more moneies from you and IRCC will discover the case and ban you. in the end, you cannot report it as you are involved in illegal transaction.

Filing to be International Student is comparatively easy, but you need to convince the IRCC that you have enough funds and you have ties back to your home country and will depart at end of the study. The decision still remains in hand of IRCC.

Thanks for that advise. Do you have a link where i can check schools and their location with my options as lower cost, ie..house rental, transportation, food and everything.

Public DLIs have basically the same tuition costs. Big difference is between colleges and universities. Unlike in the Philippines, Canadian colleges are the equivalent of vocational schools. Search only for public DLI:

For affordability, avoid major cities like Toronto or Vancouver, where most of newcomers congregate. Caveat, if you go to rural areas, job opportunities are scarce. Try to balance and get something in the middle, like suburban areas.

Also just to add but there is a housing crisis so you may not have a choice of area to live in the catchment area of your choice of school. You may need to put down a lot of cash if you don’t have a credit history to secure a rental. So you want a lot of cash to settle especially if you get a minimum wage job, which will only really support one person.

Are you hoping for a LMIA in a highly skilled job or minimum wage? To get approved for a closed work permit, you need to show that you have the experience, education to do the job

Yes, i have a total of 25 years. Customer service (Food & Beverage & Retail), Office Administration work (Construction & Oil and Gas). Just got an information that i can also apply an open work permit outside Canada before landing.

Getting a TRV, my options are in the provinces of Nunavut, Manitoba and BC. So if TRV is really support these provinces, i can confirm to come before 2024 end

How are you eligible for an open work permit? Is your spouse in Canada working, studying or PR? Few instances where you would be eligible for an open work permit. Pick a province. you do know where Nunavut is, right? Populations 38K, north, little housing. TRV allows you do go anywhere in Canada.

Get ECA, IELTS done. You have experience in minimum wage jobs.

Based on the information you have provided, you do not qualify for an open work permit. What makes you think you are eligible?
