My landlord is of Indian descent. He immigrated to Canada in the late 90s. Wonderful gentleman. Him and his family have treated me like a family member. Never once did I face any of the bad things that I have seen people write about online. Whenever I needed anything done (getting a leak fixed or some other minor things), they always got it done instantly. Seeing any one of them (the landlord, his wife, his son, his daughter) at any time is always such a pleasure because they greet me with a warm smile and we chew the fat for a bit. Trust me, it makes a world of difference to have a nice landlord.

He had advertised his place on Kijiji and I contacted him directly the first time. I didn't have to deal with a realtor.
Fantastic and really good to read a positive experience for a change.

Thanks for the tips @GandiBaat @imransyed @RSub @MajorGrom

I haven't moved yet (moving in april) and job hunting is going like trash so far. Zero responses. "Not enough experience" for entry level roles and no eligible for internships because I'm not in university. This year is probably going to be very very rough.

I can provide US landlord references, but they're from 3-4 years ago, and not Canadian (obviously).
When are you applying do you give your location as Canada? Do you have virtual Canada number on CV?

If your location and phone number is from USA, sometimes recruiters may not call back.

Ah, crap. We got a strong smell of onions in our pantry. Trying to figure out what to do as I don't think management will go for changing the shelving. Repainting possibly, but not the whole changing deal.
Try odor trapping fresheners. I found a few at Canadian Tire that worked for our garage (previous owner's brother had a full kitchen going in garage ). There are different types of the odour trappers - thick scented papers and scented pearls in a tub are the ones I used.

I also heard that stanless steel traps onion/garlic smells, not sure how true that is :D.

Yeah, my location is Canada on the resume. regarding phone numbers, i don't have a virtual Canadian number (VOIPs are banned here I believe). but I usually just lie and add a +1 in front of my number to hopefully trick recruiters lol. Do Canadian recruiters actaully call? In all my years living in the US, I have only ever communicated via email or zoom/teams.

Oh and my resume also mentions that I'm a permanent resident, not sure if that's good or bad

Hey guys, this is applicable to all those who've cleared TEF/TCF or have a decent level of French.. Destination Canada (a federal govt orgn) is organising a virtual job fair in a couple of weeks for IT and hospitality sectors.

https://destinationcanadajobforumemploi2023.vfairs.com/fr

@mushymush, this might be a good starting point for finding employment..
Thanks for sharing this. I'll take a look, but I seriously doubt I'll take the time to translate my resume into french. Screw that. Happy to advertise french skills, but if the focus of the job is french, I'm not really interested.

Seems all good, but having Canadian number is very helpful. Try getting a virtual number for now !

Once you have applied, recruiters will generally e-mail you asking your preferred time for discussion (screening round). Here is where they may not arrange a zoom/teams call but would prefer to have it on phone

I'll keep this in mind, thanks. I remember you said you got a job before moving right?
Not at all. I looked for it 2 weeks after getting here and I think I got very lucky with it, because I applied to hundreds of jobs over multiple provinces and I still do it out of habit.. and I still have not heard back from anywhere.
I dont want to depress you though, there are a lot of jobs available in the market though. They may not be in your current domain but you won't need to burn the money that you come with when you land. Eg. Customer/Sales service.

btw @GandiBaat @MajorGrom
what's your take on this Google failing/fear mongering going on? Does this have a real potential of a paradigm shift?

Fundamentally it looks like Google has many more cash cows than Microsoft but they have stopped/dont pay dividends.
Looking at this from a multi decade investment perspective.

Yes, they will call for sure. Don’t do that. Just get a virtual number.

idk what the hell Lloydminster is, but do they have jobs? xD
My intuition was right. In the US, you can find a Chinese takeout even in the remotest places. In Canada, I found it to be opposite as I see Indian restaurants in remote towns here. When I searched for Lloydminster, I expected an Indian restaurant and I actually found one. If Indians are living, then there is something in that town.
