Just thought I would share this with everyone on the forum. When ordering notes make sure you use the correct link. There are many 3rd party website who are charging $40 plus dollars to access the notes. Depending on what information you are looking to access it should either be FREE or $5.00

I've added the link from the Canadian website.

Just to add, if the person is residing in Canada, under Privacy Act he/she can order notes for free.

How do you get them for free? As soon as you go the the link provided it says "$5" right at the beginning. Is there other sites I can use to get them for free or..

Same site. When the system asks you under which law/act are you ordering the notes, you have an option to use Privacy Act or Access to information act. If you use the first one, it is free, for the second one you need to pay 5 dol. But the problem is that the Privacy act is applicable only if you are a Canadian citizen, pr or are currently in Canada. Here is the link:

I'm slightly confused on the process. I'm a Canadian citizen, living abroad with my wife during this process. If we want to get GCMS notes on her PR process, is it my information I enter since I'm the sponsor, or her information since it's her PR we're inquiring after? If the former, is it free under privacy act if I use my parents to apply on my behalf from within Canada, except since I'm not in Canada then I have to use the secondary option?

I might be wrong, cause my situation was different (both of us were in Canada), but I think that you can get notes of your (sponsorship) part of the application for free under Privacy Act. As for your wife, she is not pr or citizen and she is not in Canada, therefore you will have to order the notes under Access Act, and need to pay $5 (even if notes are ordered by anyone in Canada). I hope I didn't make things even more confusing.

Are there any differences in the body of the gcms notes if one were to order under either privacy or access to information act? Or are they basically the same thing?

There is a form that the applicant needs to sign in order for the sponsor to get the notes, only giving the authority to the sponsor to access your private info.

Hi, everybody. I'm new member here. Thanks for all information provided.
I'm Canadian and current live in Canada, my wife was Vietnamese and live in Vietnam. I try to order GCMS note online asking for note of my wife's immigration (Not mine sponsorship). My wife
is not pr or citizen and she is not in Canada. The CIC site allow me apply under privacy act but I just worry after 30 days they will tell me that since my wife is not pr or citizen and she is not in Canada, I can not ask her information under privacy act, that will waste one month of time. Anybody have experience of this? Thanks in advance.

do the shipt the notes internationally or provide a soft copy?

You can choose receive by e-mail. I don't know if they ship internationally even if they do that will take long time.

Your wife will have to fill this form and send it to you and with it you can request notes on her behalf. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/atip/form-imm5744.asp

There is no difference between the notes ordered under different acts. However, if you order only sponsors/applicants part, the notes will be different (this again don't depend on the act you're using)
