Hi! So my daughter and I are PR's and we are eligible for citizen ship this year. We are from the UK and both had British citizenship. My daughter's biological dad is in the UK but can't come to Canada as he has a criminal record. He doesn't give child support, see my daughter or contact her (we have a court order from the UK that states that I am allowed to relocate my daughter to Canada and he needs to maintain contact with her - however he doesn't).

My question is, my husband wants to adopt my daughter. He's a Canadian citizen and the initial plan is when my daughter is 16, she can go back to the UK and give her own consent (legal age of consent in the UK) for her step-dad to adopt her or legally change her surname to my husband's surname. However, she's now 11 and wants to get her surname change right away. We obviously would want to wait until she's a Canadian citizen which would probably take a year to process.

What do you think is the best option for her? Thanks in advance.
