Government planning to eliminate Immigrant landing fee

the CanadaVisa Team - 06 January, 2006

In 1995 a fee of $975 (CAD) was imposed on all adult immigrants landing in Canada. This Right of Permanent Resident Fee was designed to help pay for settlement services for newly landed immigrants.

The unpopular fee, Prime Minister Paul Martin now calls "a barrier to immigrants entering Canada", is expected to be phased out over the course of the next Liberal party mandate. It will, however, undergo an immediate drop of $600 and a further decrease to $300 over the next twelve months.

"We are able now to basically remove that landing fee, but nonetheless provide the settlement services," Martin explains. The Liberals have promised $398 million over five years for integration and settlement.
