Hi guys, thanks for sharing good information here. Does anyone has any format related to the work experience during PhD. Will my research and teaching work, during Indian PhD, be counted as foreign work experience.

It sounds like you were not considered an employee. The fact that you don’t have pay stubs will be the first red flag for IRCC, regardless whether you can get a reference letter from someone. You can save yourself a lot of headache and money by waiting until you have 1 year of work experience rather than hoping that IRCC considers your degree program work experience.

That’s probably not what you wanted to hear, but I think most other seniors would agree with me.
No, i have checked with others and they had same case as they were enrolled as student. The point is during PHD all the time was spend in Research due to this we can claim it as work experience.

You’re missing the point.

Whomever you have “checked with” may have had different circumstances than you. It doesn’t mean you can expect the same results.

You can claim experience during a PhD if you were an employee and not just an enrolled student. To be considered an employee you generally need an employment contract. With that usually comes regular pay stubs, maybe benefits, vacation time, etc. Others who have replied to this thread have said they have one or more of these things that regular employees usually have.

If you were just paid a scholarship, then you were likely not classified as an employee and cannot claim your PhD as work experience.

You can use PhD experience as work experience.

I already contacted CIC about that and my German PhD is counted.

To others please do not deceive people, in India or Canada it could be different as people have classes and learning.

In Germany during PhD (in technical university):
-you employed as Research and Teaching Worker;
-you have no classes;
-you do not have exams;
-you do not have education progamm at all.
-research 80%, teaching 20%, classes 0%.

In contrary in my home country where many of my friends did PhD:
-they have 40% of learning classes
-then 50% of research activity
-10% of teaching.

It is very important to clear this.
In my particular case and PhD from German University can be counted. it also depend on University.

Thesis writing which you can count as learning took only last full 4 month from 4 years of PhD.

Did you had classes in Sweden?
Hey have you got PR based on PHD experience and also were you enrolled as student or as employee.
Please share your experience it will help me a lot.

Nick , Thanks for sharing your info. I also did my PhD from Europe and I didn't have to take any classes during those 4 years. We had student admission as a PhD but we also have staff benefits. Only one course (if you have attended any workshops, schools, then you don't have to take any course), 2 departmental seminars, 1 conference and min. two published articles we needed as a requirement (credits) for enrolling into the thesis defense, then of course the writing of thesis. I already got a letter from my Prof. that I worked as research assistant and was a full time employee with 80% research and 20% teaching activities (mentoring thesis students, assisting them in assignments etc).

I hope this as a work experience counts for me too.
Hey have your work experience considered by CIC

We will soon reach my first 4 months after AOR. And we are using
PhD work experience gained in Switzerland for our application.
According to GCMS notes everything is good so far, but no PPR yet.
Hey were you employed as student or employee ?

A scholarship cannot be considered salary if you were not an employee. A scholarship is for studying and a salary is for working. It all depends on how you are classified by your university. Some people are both a student and employee, others only student. Whether a scholarship is taxable or not has nothing to do with how the university classifies you.

At my university/Department, most graduate students are funded through grants from professors. For the others funded through scholarships, the scholarship is typically paid directly to the university, the university takes a percentage for overhead, then the remainder is paid to the student as salary. We even have distinction between ‘employee postdocs’ and ‘award postdocs’.
In this case what is the point of having NOC 4012, which clearly states that enrolled in university is must.

The National Occupation Classification (NOC) scheme was developed and used for purposes other than immigration in Canada.

Hi All;
I just wanted to share my pr experience here. FSW category.

I was a PhD candidate (graduate research assistant) in United States when I applied for my pr in Canada last year. I used noc 4012 and my graduate research assistant work experience (20h/wk, 3.5 years, 2 year of masters and 1.5 yr PhD). This was the only work experience I had. I received my ppr in September 2017, landed in November 2017, and received pr card in January 2018. Now I am still in USA trying to complete my PhD in 3 months before I move to Canada in fall 2018.

I thought this information might be useful for someone in this thread.....

I don't know about your first question. As for the second yes, we used PhD candidate and made the advisor to write
this title in the work experience letter.
Can you please tell whether your PhD work was counted as job experience or not. I was enrolled in PhD in India for 1.5 years and got fellowship for the same. I discontinued the same due to some reason. Will I get job experience or not.

Hi, I did my PhD in Belgium for four years and was also classified as an employee with a salary, holidays, and so on. I can already claim two years of work experience from other jobs (one as a postdoc, one as a researcher, I suppose perhaps different NOCs) so I just need to prove one more year, so these four years as a PhD-candidate should be enough (it was specified that professors cannot ask me to work more than 8 hours a week, but over 4 years that should come down to a year of work experience right?). In any case, I'd be interested in receiving the reference letter as well! Thanks

Hi,

I did my PhD in Sweden and I was employed with benefits etc. in full time basis. In Swedish system most PhDs are full time employees.
I am wondering can I use it as foreign work experience in my express entry profile.
I know for people who did their PhD in Canada, it doesn't count as work experience but I am not sure about people who did it outside Canada and as an employee in university. I can ask my previous university to write a letter and explain.

I appreciate if you would share your info/experiences regrind this.

Thanks,
Even your these four years of work experience is sufficient for express entry only you nees reference letter from university.
Good luck
