USA to Canada and back -- sending passports to ottawa

I have received a request for passport. I had applied in India, but now i am in USA.

my question is can i send the prepaid canadapost xpresspost envelope to Ottawa with a return mailing address in the USA. Will they mail the passports back in that envelope to the USA. Has anyone got any experience in this recently. Ive seen posts in 2015 wherein people have done this, was wondering if things have changed.

They will post your passport to the address they have on file. If you haven't changed that to your USA residential address, please do ASAP. This can be done over the phone with CIC I believe.
Then take the next steps.

but if i put my current USA address on the canadapost prepaid xpresspost envelope, wont they send the passports there.

I am hesitant to change original address which i had given when filing, for the fear that, then they will want to transfer the entire file to the embassy in USA and knowing how fast they work, it might be atleast 3-6 months. Already been waiting for over 4 years now.
