Is is very difficult to get a job at the university level. Are you doing your PhD in Canada? It is still competitive to get a job at the college level and philosophy classes in college are not very common. Most college professors are on contracts and are not paid that well so have multiple jobs. Some have another contract teaching at another college or do something completely different.

People may not realize that most college professors are not being employed for 4 hours per week. Most are part-time contract employees. In Ontario many college professors have contracts reviewed every semester so very little job security. If you can get a full-time job and get tenure then you will be in a great position but that’s pretty rare these days.
