We are in the process of applying for our Permanent Resident Visa. This is taking longer than we thought. I have a 16 year old who is due to leave school in th UK in June 2011.Does anyone know if he would be allowed to attend college/university without us having received our prv,if he stayed with family in Toronto until we hopefully receive it.Any info on this would be appreciated. :D

He would need a student visa and his college fees would be about 3 times higher for an international student than they are for a PR.

You could look for colleges together and talk to them about his options. If he wants a student visa, he must apply to a college and get accepted first anyway.

Another option might be to take the last year of high school. Since he has already completed that in the UK, he would be taking it again but maybe Canada is teaching something slightly differently and it might give him a better preparation for Canadian college. As a minor child staying with relatives in Canada, it would likely not be a problem for him to enrol in high school and it would not cost anything. You can ask your relatives if they can ask their local high schools about his options with that.

Another option might be to start his studies in the UK and later see if he can transfer. It is hard though to transfer in the middle of your studies and you often don't get any credit for what you have already done. Also if he starts, he might decide he wants to finish in the UK and that will mean that he may not meet his PR residency requirements and will lose his PR.

One more is doing a gap year and just working. In the UK until he gets PR and in Canada afterwards.

Just a note that if your son is 16 - has he completed his O levels, or A levels? Most students who graduate grade 12 in Canada will be 18 in their last school year, or the if they're born in the later part of the year (Sept-December) turn 18 during the first few months of college or University. Don't quote me, but if he only has he's O levels he may be only able to apply to college. This is often the same as our students taken 'Open" or Applied level grade 12 courses vs "U" (university) courses which is what the universities want for admissions. You'll need to clarify this.

College -is primarily for training that receives a diploma or certificate

Universities - primarily have programs that you receive a degree

Some colleges have affiliated themselves with universities to have a few joint programs, the above is the usual format.

See if this link helps your son see what courses are available. Depending on his interest as in the UK, there are certain schools the are recognized as 'top tier' schools for different things. Eg) In Ontario, Waterloo is one of the best IT/Engineering schools. Laurier, Queens and Toronto are great business schools. Guelph is known for vet medicine etc.

I think the option would be for my son to retake last year at school again, will give him the oportunity to meet people and do some schoolwork before applying for college. Do you know who we would have to contact reference schooling in the Whitby area Toronto. My son and husband are coming to Toronto in Feb to look at schools/colleges etc.

The 2nd school on there only goes up to grade 11 so that doesn't seem to be a good choice either but you can talk to these schools and see what they say. Ask them if it will be a problem for him to enrol if he is staying with relatives. They might prefer him to get a student visa for minor child but that should not be a big deal. If you talk to your relatives who live there, they might also know something about the local schools and could give you some info.
