RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT INQUIRY

Dear Sir/Madam:

I have lived in Hamilton, Ontario from August 2017 to November 30, 2019 on a study permit, and graduated from McMaster University with a Master of Arts in Economic Policy on November 21, 2019. I returned to my home country in December 2019 to attend to a very important unavoidable family situation and intended to return to Canada in the next six (6) months. Due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus in the first quarter of 2020 and the subsequent closure of the Canadian border, I was unable to return to Canada. I am currently out of status and residing outside of Canada.

I have intended to apply for the Master Stream of the Ontario Provincial Nomination Program before November 21, 2021 to immigrate to Canada. With this, please provide me clarity on the residency requirement for this program:

1. What is the definition of “ Have legally lived in Ontario for at least one year in the last two years before applying”? Can you please give an example?



2. Does my residency years (August 2017 to November 2019) stated above meet this residency eligibility requirement for the program?

1. Being on a study permit or work permit.
2. It does not. This will fall outside of the 2 year period required. You needed to apply by Nov / Dec 2020 to qualify. You'll have to look into other immigration programs. This one unfortunately is not an open for you.
