Renewing passport after sending application

We are sending our spousal sponsorship application for me and my wife. My passport expires on April 30, 2017 and I sent it to be renewed yesterday. It might take more than a month to be renewed.I was wondering if I can send photocopies of my current passport and when I receive new one I update CIC. Is it possible?

Would it be sending photocopies to same Mississauga address or would I update with scan of my new passport online?

Should I put a note to the officer that I have applied for my passport renewal and whenever it comes, I'll send them photocopies or ...

When I called CIC officer, they essentially said go and read checklist and guidelines. I said I have done and I didn't see any specification about how long passport should be valid. He said sometimes for some streams they ask for passport to be valid for at least 6 months.

Do you think I'll be fine? I live in Canada.

Also, I read about some cases when approval of the sponsor is done within a week. Would that create an issue for me? I mean the officer will proceed to next step (my application) while I haven't received my renewed passport !!!
