I have a bit of a problem. Myself and my wife were hoping to land in Toronto in March 2010 but our planned time for settlement there has been disrupted due to unforseen circumstances.
The question I have is. Can we land in March 2010 and activate our PR status and then fly back home to sort out our circumstances and then land again in July 2010 for settlement.

Leon, would I have to remain there for long after first landing.

No, you can leave next day. The only thing is your PR card. It takes 6-8 weeks to arrive by mail so you probably will not have time to wait for it. You can either give the address of Canadian relatives to get it mailed to and they can then mail it to you or if you don't have relatives in Canada, you can tell the IO to hold off on the card for now and you can apply for it when you come back to stay. Once you are ready to go back, if you don't have the PR card, you can ask the Canadian embassy if you need a PR travel document to return or if your landing papers are enough.
