My wife and I have been living together for 4 years and this year we got married, so we wanted to change our marital civil status on the taxes declaration but....

We always filed the taxes (federal and Quebec) as single, and now we just realized that we should had applied as common law partners, and from now, as married.

We came from a country where the law sayas that you are single or married, there is no mid point...

What we are supposed to do now? is there any issues related to it? or we can just rectify the information?

Please some help! Thanks!!

I'm in the same position except I should have filed taxes as common-law last year but I just forgot to change and was lazy updating it last year. Ive sent in a change of marital status form with the date we became common law end of 2009. It will have an effect is you've been receiving any tax benefits (child, gst) that you would not or would have been entitled to if you've claimed common law. I guess you could send a letter along with your return and explain the situation.

My bf will have to payback some GST from last year but I think its better to be honest.

100% agree, believe me, CRA don't let go that quickly once you get onto their radar. :(
