I tried to find a thread about this, but can't find one. Does anyone know how quickly you can start working after you land? Do you have to wait for the PR card to arrive or will the visa in the passport work in the meantime? Does this also work for finding apartments?

Thanks!!

As soon as you walk out of Immigration. Mind, you might want to go to Service Canada and get a SIN (takes 15 minutes) as the employer will need it. Apartments owner only care about the colour of your money, not your status.

Will employers hire you without a SIN if you show all of your other paperwork, or do you usually have to have a SIN card in hand?

When I got my SIN they gave me a piece of paper with the number on it and said I could use that while waiting for the card to come through.

This is true but alot of agencies now perform a credit check so there can be some hoops to jump unless you find a private landlord. Since you most likley will have no credit score in canada they may require co signer. A hassle i know but Credit score is everything in canada, it took me a good 2 years to build up a good credit score.

Does your credit score follow you from the U.S. to Canada, I wonder?

Nope! :) Good news for me, lol. Bad news for people with good US credit.. you kind of have to begin again.. but banks and stuff have a lot of provisions for new immigrants to help you build your credit.

That's great news for me too! haha

What a relief to be able to start fresh. But I could have sworn I read somewhere that they use the same credit-check companies as here so they could link you to your SSN in the US. Does anyone else know of this?

I don't know for sure, but the guy here at the Canadian bank told me that your US credit doesn't follow you here.. maybe if you had some huge outstanding debt or something, but a few credit cards or something probably won't be a problem.

I think Equifax is one of the companies you are thinking of. Their website says they are in 14 countries. I don't think it's a matter of where the company is but the database that is separate.
