I wonder if someone knows the answer to this one.
We have our visa and will be entering in December.
After a few weeks we will return to our country to finish some work commitments. We will then make our final move around May 2011.
I am a chef and have a huge and valuable knife collection that will need to come with me in my luggage in May (NOT in the container that follows).
However, we will need to show goods entering in December and goods to follow at a later stage.
Obviously I am not taking the knives with me in December, but at the same time, they will not be in the container that follows later.
How do I go about this with customs??

Thanks!

just indicate in the goods to follow or in yr list of goods accompanying u and if u are questioned then indicate that they are part of yr tools as a chef. Since yr COPR also shows yr occupation, the IO will know it and check if there is any problem with it. U can check in yr tools but for sure, u can hand carry with u.

1. U add them in your GTF list.
2. Get it stamped when u enter in Dec-2010.
3. During the May-2011 move, u place them in the "check-in" baggage.
4. Enter Canada as usual. If the BSO enquires* - show them the GTF list.
5. S/he "X"es the item/s. U keep the list with balance intact.
6. I'd also take a pic of the knives & attach them with the GTF list (same like the jewelry).

*Probably the BSO won't check/open your baggage at all.

What type of knives are we talking about? Canada has some pretty strict rules when it comes to importing anything that can be construed as a weapon.

For a chef his/her set of "kitchen" knives r as precious as his/her cuisine.
