Hi,

I would like to get some advice with regard to my immigration situation, and what preparations I should be making to proceed with it.

- I currently reside in Canada with status as a dependent Child of a diplomat
- I have been in Canada since late 2001
- I completed high school and a B.Sc degree here in Canada and I am currently enrolled in a second undergraduate degree
- I do not have work experience that I can leverage towards a skilled worker application
- I have been in a relationship for the last 5 years, and we have been living in the same house, with her parents, for the last 7 months. We basically went through University together.
- I am turning 25 soon, which will remove my status as a dependent child and my VISA will expire on the same date as my birthday.

My girlfriend is a 3rd year medical student, she has a line of credit but no income from a job. She receives government money in the form of student loans. She's bought a house on a morgage and is renting it, thus paying the morgage with rent money.

We plan on getting married and on submitting a sponsorship application for me from a Canadian office (since im already here)

I have read the CIC web content regarding this but I would like to hear if there are any tips/advice/suggestions that will make my life easier through the process. Also any suggestions regarding the situation as a whole would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you should have no problem getting a PR. Your spouse doesn't need an income to sponsor you - and since when she graduates she will be pretty much guaranteed a good job, your application will have no problems there. Student loans don't count as government money - i.e., it is not like being on welfare, which would disqualify her. Just make sure you have plenty of evidence the two of you are a couple, and evidence that you are not just renting a room in her parents' house. The visa officer could say that since your status is going to change soon, you were desperate to stay in Canada, and so asked a friend to help you, or asked your landlords to help you. With a five-year relationship, though, you should have lots of proof.

The OP will also need to get an ordinary passport, can't use dip passports for PR.
