No, because PR is not a citizenship. It's just a permit that allows you to stay in Canada for an unlimited time and work or study. If you leave Canada for a long time, you will lose it again.

If you live in Canada as a PR for 3 or more years, you can apply for citizenship but then you may lose your home country passport depending on your home country law. Canada will not require it but your home country might.

Tarun,

from your name, you seem to be an Indian. So, if you opt for Canadian Citizenship after 3 years stay in Canada, you will have to give up Indian citizenship, hence your Indian passport. India does not allow dual citizenship...

But, it will earn you a Canadian passport.

BTW, it's very easy to get Indian visa if you have been an Indian citizen in the past.

Yes aanbaan....you are right. My home country is India.

Is it mandatory to get Canadian Citizenship if one stays on PR for three years in Canada. I guess not but just checking. If I do not want to loose Indian Citizenship, can I stay on PR forever OR till the time I want to be in Canada? Will there be any problem?

Also I think once any Indian citizen gets Canadian Citizenship, he/she can apply for OCI card that way he/she need to apply for Indian Visa for travelling to India. This is what my understanding is. Do you think that is correct?

It is not mandatory to apply for citizenship in Canada. You can be PR forever. The only thing is that you can not vote and you can not work certain jobs in the government.

There are a couple of things you need to do to keep your PR. One is stay on the good side of the law. Another is live in Canada at least 2 years out of every 5. Your PR card is valid for 5 years so they check this every time you renew but they also have a right to check it in between. If you are entering the country and they ever suspect that you have not been living in Canada, they can make you prove it.

Tarun, the canadian immigration system is quite flexible. if you really are interested in the PR, i'll recommend you to go for it. and take a call on applying for citizenship anytime after 3 years.

All the best
