Here's my situation.. I was born in the U.S, My Father is American and Caucasian, My Mother is Canadian and Native American Indian with Status card.
I know I have Dual Citizenship because i have been looking this up for a long time now.. my problem is trying to get my passports.. I went to Vancouver to get my passport ( Sadly I forgot my Birth Certificate at home ) and was quickly turned away because I didn't have the proper papers. some lady said i needed a landed immigrant card or visa or something like that because i am "American" and she couldn't understand how i could hold a SIN card, BC Drivers Licence, Care Card be able to work in BC / Canada and not have the proper papers.. I also have a SSN for the U.S.
So here's my question..
"How Can I get my Passport(S), American and Canadian, if i face this every time i go to renew my licence or try to get my passport? "
Do I need to have an immigration consultant / Lawyer with me for the first time i get either or both passports? other then taking my birth certificate with me next time what other documents do i need? also I thought the " J " Treaty was there to help natives like me in this situation.. can someone help me with this? I have been trying to find stuff online to try and help me figure out what i need to do and it is not helping..
i need my passport because in my work we sometimes send people to other countries to help fight forest fires, thats what i do i fight forest fires.

Hi,

First of all, thank you for the dangerous job saving forests.

I don't believe that the Jay Treaty of 1794 (??) would help because from what I have found, Canada never signed the treaty.
My maternal grandfather was full-blood Cherokee and I had been researching the treaty to see if it could help me with my own cross-border issues.

Sorry, but that's all that I can add. Perhaps you could get your US passport from the US embassy here??

Good luck!

1. If your mother was born in Canada, then you can apply for proof of citizenship, which is the first step before you can apply for a passport. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp
2. Also if your mother registered you as a band member under the Canada Indian Act, then you are eligible for for a band card, which allows you to enter Canada.
