Hello, I have PGWP that will be expired in July of 2014
I have worked a couple of restaurants for the past two years, which doesn't help me with CEC.
However I will be working from this Thursday as a programmer working for a small company.
30 hours a week, and it pays $14-$15 per hour. It's a permanent position
:)
I can work from home as well.
The company will communicate with me via Skype during my work hours.
I have BA in computer science so I believe that this constitutes as skilled working experience.

I got some questions though.

1. If I maintain this job until the next year this time around, would it constitute as a year of full time working experience in terms of applying for CEC?
2. Would the wage be the problem later when I apply for CEC? I read quite a few articles recently mentioning applications being rejected due to their wage being too low compared to the average wage of that particular occupation.
3. Can I apply for OHIP?

Thank you

1) According to the current guideline 30 hrs is considered full time work, as long as you work 12 months you can apply.

2)There have been a number of people who have been rejected since their wages weren't consistent with their NOC code, this can potentially be an issue.Ask the company that you'll be working for the NOC code of this position. Then compare it at workingincanada. gc. ca.

3) You can apply for OHIP as soon as you have proof of full-time employment. The confusing part is if OHIP considers 30 hours/week full time or 37.5 hours, you'll have to look into that.

Regarding the ohip question I just found a page

:ww w.statcan.gc.ca/concepts/definitions/labour-travail-class03b-eng.htm
(Sorry i put a space in between w s they don't allow me to post a link)
It constitutes anything over 30 as a full time

I just checked workingcanada. Gc. Ca site for all the relative noc code and their wage,
It varies so much. I'm on the low side though. Like a dollar less than the low avg wage.

Do as the others suggested and check out your NOC code. Here is what I found:

http://www.workingincanada.gc.ca/LMI_report_bynoc.do?lang=eng&noc=2174&reportOption=wage&titleKeyword=computer+programmer

These results are 2010-2011. There are only two locations reporting near $15.00 from two-three years ago.

Also take into account, you'll probably bring home 275-300 a week. I couldn't even pay rent and buy food with that little.

Even though its an entry level? I'm more concerned about the cec process. IT technicians and web programmers get paid 15-20

Web developer:

http://www.workingincanada.gc.ca/LMI_report_bynoc.do?&noc=2175&reportOption=wage

If you're in Ontario $14-15 is about right for entry level wage.

On a personal note, I'd be pissed to spend 4 years in uni to only make $14 per hour! My husband's warehouse job starts employees at $14/hour! (They obviously don't qualify as CEC experience though.)

Thank you :) The wage really doesn't bother me at this point because I couldn't find anything in my field for a year or so. At this point, I'm happy with this :) and at least when the next opportuni comes along, I can tell myself that I didn't waste any of my precious time just waiting around.

There's nothing that states you can't work at home. I'd just make certain you would be an employee of the company (not a self-employed contractor). Also, just to be sure, the company is Canadian, yes?
