If you have status in Canada (work permit or permanent residence) you would usually qualify for provincial medical insurance (subject to minimum waiting periods which can be up to 3 months).
Coverage offered varies from province to province however most province coverages would likely proved cover for main doctors visits, hospitilization etc.
Private healthcare is only addon for typically dental, and prescription medicine & glasses.
If you are concerned over coverage during the initial waiting period, purchasing travel medical insurance should prove adequate for that period.
I would suggest that once you know which province you will be living in you have a look at provincial medical for that province. Then purchase the provincial care (if you need to pay for it - some provinces are free), and if you feel the need you can get addon private for the extras. Though for most major emergencies that you could experience the provincial cover is more than adequate.
Cheers!!
