Canada announces $100M in scholarships for Indian students under new education measures
On the morning of March 2, 2026, the office of Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement regarding new measures agreed to, which include:
- 100 million dollars in funding from the University of Toronto, providing up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students in Canada.
- 13 new partnerships between Indian and Canadian universities to facilitate greater study and exchange opportunities.
- The launching of three new hybrid study locations in India:
- An innovation campus as part of a collaboration between Dalhousie University and the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Tirupati; and
- The University of Toronto Center of Excellence and McGill University Center of Excellence, both of which will direct Indian and Canadian talent around the research and development of Artificial Intelligence.
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between India and Canada to facilitate opportunities for collaboration and exchanges among institutions in both countries in the performing arts, visual arts, music, books, entertainment technologies, and other creative industries.
Must know this news for asylums and refugees claimants. Basically, universities in Canada and India will have exchange programs and partnerships. It will allow Indian students to come to Canada and study for B.Sc and M.Sc degrees straightaway. No tests and/or entry requirements. So indian students will get PGWP (Postgraduate work permit) if they are eligible.
If they dont get PGWP or their PG work permit will expire, they will file for asylum. How I am sure they will do this?
According to current stats released by official immigration Canada sites, number 1 asylum seekers in Canada come from India.
It will create massive long q in Asylum system. Currently, there is huge backlog in the Asylum system in the place. Many people like us are waiting for many years just to get protected status.
Whats ur thoughts on this? Let me know.
In my personal honest opinion, we - asylum claimants shouldnt wait for more than 2 years just to get protected status in Canada due to current immigration plans and future looks terrible for asylum seekers. There are many countries which still offer residencies. I wouldn't wait too long and leave if my pending asylum case stuck in the system take too long.
Cheers
