automatic re-validation visa

Hello,

my h1b stamp is expired and have a valid 1797 up to 2018.

Can i travel to Canada and come back using automatic re-validation visa(AVR)? Is this AVR something that i need to apply or just travel using my latest i797 and expired visa? I intend to come back in a week. please share your experience as well if possible.

No issue. Only problem would be a delay in getting boarding pass while returning back if you are coming by flight. If its by car/road then you are good. Just keep your I797 and recent payslips (some proof of residency in US - just in case, mostly they wont ask for one time i was asked for driving license).
I assume that your I94 is printed at the lower portion of I797.
If border official asks about when your expired visa, you can tell that you are planning on it in few months to get a new one.
