I am an American who married a Canadian over a year ago. While trying to apply for permanent resident status I keep hitting walls. I came here (to Canada) on vacation years ago, fell in love, got married, and have no status. My driver's license expired and I have no passport. I am told I need a passport to get the medical. I am told to get a passport I need a record of landing here, which I don't have. Any advice?

Talk to the US Embassy about getting your passport. If you are a US citizen, they have to give you a passport, whether you are legally in Canada or not.

You would only need the record of landing if you are applying for a Canadian passport, which you cannot do until you have receive approval for permanent residency. You need to apply for a US passport.

As Leon already suggested, talk to the US Embassy about getting your US passport.
